CHINA: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

By onMay 15th 2015Sin categoría0 comments

Metropolitan Museum exhibition May 7-August 16, 2015

Met: “This exhibition explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. In this collaboration between The Costume Institute and the Department of Asian Art, high fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, including films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery.

From the earliest period of European contact with China in the sixteenth century, the West has been enchanted with enigmatic objects and imagery from the East, providing inspiration for fashion designers from Paul Poiret to Yves Saint Laurent, whose fashions are infused at every turn with romance, nostalgia, and make-believe. Through the looking glass of fashion, designers conjoin disparate stylistic references into a pastiche of Chinese aesthetic and cultural traditions.

The exhibition features more than 140 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear alongside Chinese art. Filmic representations of China are incorporated throughout to reveal how our visions of China are framed by narratives that draw upon popular culture, and also to recognize the importance of cinema as a medium through which to understand the richness of Chinese history.”05.Chinese Dragon Robes with Yves Saint Laurent gown and Ralph Lauren Tuxedo 06Chinese Export Vase Roberto Cavalli and McQueen gowns 06DressTomFordforYvesSaintLaurentFall2004 11EveningDressJeanPaulGaultierFall2001 15DressJohnGallianoforHouseofDiorFall1997 58.196.26_front 0004

SILK THREAD

By onFebruary 20th 2015Sin categoría0 comments

The story of silk began more than four thousand years ago, In the royal garden, a warm breeze spun the veined undersides of leaves. The Empress, Lei Zu, the fourteen-year-old wife of the cosmic Yellow Emperor, was drinking tea. A cocoon splashed into her cup. In three blinks the single strand of silk loosened by hot tea became an Empire’s destiny.

Trip to Istanbul, Turkey – Silk thread weaving.

A Glimpse into the World of Haute Couture

By onFebruary 17th 2015Sin categoría0 comments

Back in 2014 Dior inaugurated Le Petit Theatre in China and now it travels around the globe.
The exhibition give us an opportunity to learn and admire the art of traditional haute couture and discover the story behind the making of these miniature dresses crafted in full-scale precision.

“I thought that, to explain the reasoning behind it, this house should be – in a time when everything is tending to the machine – more like an artisanal laboratory than the ideal of a factory,” Christian Dior.
